alex0rm While I absolutely love Speed Trials & Angeles, I feel like I Don't Think I'm Ever Gonna Figure It Out has got to be one of the most underrated Elliott tracks. Such a great tune, short and sweet. Favorite track: I Don't Think I'm Ever Gonna Figure It Out.

giventofly87 While “Needle in the Hay” packs one of the biggest emotional uppercuts to everyone who discovered Elliott Smith through the song and it’s use in Royal Tenenbaums, it’s “Speed Trials” that really encapsulates the incredible songwriting skills Elliott had. He packs so many ideas, images, and sounds into one song, almost an anthem whispered into a 4-track. The b-sides are no slouches either, and this 7” is a great show of the different styles he was able to master in such a short time. Favorite track: Speed Trials.

about

Released on October 1, 1996, “Speed Trials” was the first single from Elliott Smith’s breakthrough album, Either/Or. The track’s keening rhythms and languished vocal melodies have kept it a favorite in Smith’s catalogue decades after its debut. Backed with additional Either/Or track “Angeles” and the elsewhere unreleased “I Don't Think I'm Ever Gonna Figure It Out”, this 7” highlights Smith’s talent during one of the most earnest and creative periods of his life.
